How to Wear a Matching Suit Three Ways: Business-y, Casual, Going Out

Fall, featured, JOY, Work

Let’s get real. I spend a lot of time in my exercise clothes. Like pretty much most of the time. (If we’re getting really real, I also am pretty stinky most of the time because SHOWERING IS HARD, PEOPLE.)

So, going to Alt Summit every year, where it’s a veritable daily catwalk, is VERY EXCITING. Folks get dressed up at these conferences and I am more than happy to play along and pretend for a week I remember how to walk in heels.

What I don’t like to do though is drop a bunch of cash on outfits that I’ll only wear this one week out of the year. Yes, I want to knock people’s socks off with my Outstanding Professionalism, but I also need to be able to make it work in Real Life, which involves a lot less strutting and a lot more schlepping.

So, today we’re going to look at how to make your suit work for you like an intern working for Miranda Priestly. ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT, BABY.

LOOK 1: BE A BOSS

Listen, you’re a total boss. It’s time you look it.

Grab your matchy-matchy suit that tells the world you are BOLD and DARING and don’t have time for trivial decisions like, “Do these pants match this jacket?” I don’t know, closet, because I AM CHANGING THE WORLD, OK? I have time to throw on rockin’ suit with white accessories and then I need to walk my bad ass out the door. That’s all.

LOOK 2: CHILLED OUT, SERIOUS BUSINESS WOMAN

Even Mom Bosses need a day off, am I right? And these pants transition perfectly to lounging around because they’re elasticated (yippee!) so they grow with your stomach as you lay on the couch and eat. Which I know nothing about. Now, if you’ll excuse me while I wipe this Indian curry from my chin with this handy naan.

I mean is that a Serious Business Woman or what?

Part of the beauty of this particular suit is the floral pattern and looser cut material, which means it can be casual-ified pretty easily. If it were a pin-stripe and/or a fabric with more structure, it would probably feel dressier and not lend itself as well to sandals and a t-shirt. Having said all that, I think you can almost always tone down pants with a tucked in tee and the right attitude. ????

LOOK 3: MEETINGS, OUT WITH THE GALS, PICK UP AND THE MILLION OTHER THINGS YOU DO

As a Mom Boss, you do it all, but you don’t need me to tell you that. Look 3 lets you transition through the insanity daily life throws at you. You can meet with clients, hit the grocery store, and take the kids to the park, without looking over- or underdressed for any of them.

I mean how fun is this blazer on its own? It’s dressy enough to take jeans up a notch, while still casual enough you can hang with the kids without feeling stuffy. Mom Bossing at its finest.

There you have it! Have a convinced you to buy a matchy-matchy suit? I’ve put a few of my favorites below, although I couldn’t figure out how to get this gold one in there and OMG. Let me know which (if any!) you’d wear! (I have the striped one in my cart…).
