How to make friends as an adult (with my fool-proof 3-step process to finding your peeps)

In 2023, Gallup did a poll and 25 percent of adults reported feeling lonely. That means that one out of every four of us feels lonely! And it is so bad that Vivek Murthy, who is our Surgeon General, called it a public health crisis. He said that loneliness has such far reaching consequences that the health impact is the same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day – 15 cigarettes a day! And you don’t even get the high of cigarettes! So, it’s literally all downside, right?
Loneliness is also associated with increased risk of heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. Personally, I do not need any more help with my cognitive decline, thank you very much.
But I also think it’s weird because, as a parent, we’re basically NEVER alone because we always have people with us - it’s almost too much stimulation most days. The problem is, it’s not always the ‘fill-you-up’ kind; instead, it’s the kind where you’re constantly giving and putting out and that can feel really lonely.
So, you know what you need? Friends!
Yes, you do! You need the kind of friends who make you laugh, who make you feel better, that leave you feeling seen and take away the lonelies. But, I know, I know, it can be hard to make friends as an adult.
So today we’re going to talk about how you can actually make new friends as an adult, easily and without too much risk. I’m going to give you my foolproof system for meeting new people and also sussing out if they’re actually your peeps.
